High-school girls in New Zealand are using cellphone text-messaging to
maintain the pecking order:
New Zealand Herald: Cellphone bans are becoming a necessity in schools where students use text messaging to spread nasty gossip and bully classmates. "They text each other about certain girls and arrange things they can do which would exclude the girl," Mr Rowsell said.
Of course high-schoolers are going to use any social-tool they can to exact exclusion and sustain their social hierarchy. It's interesting how devastatingly well text messaging facilitates the wicked cruelty of children. This new social medium is not the problem. It's the motivation of the girls and the culture of social stratification that produces this behavior that is.
